Last week, I received a text from one of my favorite friends,
"When do you have time for dinner with me? I miss you!"
Last night, we met up at her house so that I could see her new photography studio and then headed to Ellendale's for dinner. We started out with Cosmopolitans. Would you believe that I've never had a Cosmopolitan?! Then onto our salads and a fabulous bottle of wine. I had the Grouper with Spaetzle and she had a Bleu Cheese Filet with Chianti Reduction. Really great food! We finished strong with a Brownie with Cinnamon Ice Cream and a Creme Brule. Heavenly!
As I've gotten older, I don't make the distinction of "best friends" anymore. That term was used against me in my last relationship and I know how hurtful it can be when you don't live up. I know how painful female friendships can be when they don't work.
Today, I received an email from her:
"Thank you again for a wonderful evening.....it is always so great to have time with you.....I just love love love you!!!!!"
If you have a friend that you haven't called or seen in a while. Pick up the phone. Send a text. Mail a card. Be the kind of friend that you want to have. Leave someone at home for the evening and have some time for yourself. You're worth it.

you bet it is.hugs my friend.
I feel the same way!
I love how even tho I may not see and/or talk to all my friends on the regular, when we do catch up, it's like no time has even passed.
And gf and I strongly encourage one another to go out without the other. It's good for the soul.
Glad your dinner was delicious :)
I love cinnamon ice cream!
(Friends, too.)

Great suggestion!
I got an email today from a friend that ended with...."One of the best things to hold onto in this world is a friend".
That is so true.
Thanks for the post and for making me hungry ;)
I've learned as I grow older that I don't care how much I have in the way of money.
I consider myself wealthy when I've got good friends and family to surround myself with.
I couldn't ask for more than that.
Great post RLL!
ok ok you started it
food porn
my turn!
last weekend's girlfriend trip
one meal w/fresh rolled red cord tortillas encompasing mozzarilla, tomatoes and basil. other tortilla had blue cornmeal wrapped around mushrooms, onions, spinich and feta.
other meal was of omlette with corn, tomatoes, swiss cheese and pesto sauce. dessert (yeah with breakfast) was crepe filled with mandarin oranges, whipped cream, bananas topped with a carmel coffee cream sauce...yum!
YOUR TURN
What a wonderful night with your friend. I so agree about friendships and the importance of having those times alone with a close friend. My times alone with my friends, such as you described, are priceless and they make me better as a person. In a big way, my friendships enhance my relationship with my husband. Thanks for the reminder!
sounds like a great night
I love that. "be the kind of friend that you want to have."
So true!!
Glad you had a good time..this was a fantastic reminder. :)
That is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
If you want to get out more, make it happen.
I'm off to call a friend.
Amen. Thank god for good friends.
You hit the nail on the head on the last paragraph.
great post... cinnamon ice cream is the best...:)
Oh, God don't encourage me. ;P
Btw, your meal sounded fantastic!
You must be an awesome friend to get those kinds of messages. Your friends are lucky to have you in their lives!
Thanks for sharing such a sweet post. It serves as my motivation to write a few notes and letters.
And Ellendale's. Yum. They served me dinner tonight. As always, it was so good.
It's very nice when you get a chance to spend time with a really good friend that you don't get to see all that often.
i absolutely agree there is nuttin bettah than catchin up with a friend. i cook for my peeps and i SO enjoy that. we love to entertain and often do.
your food sounded yummy.

I love this post! It is so true...we can find ourselves forgetting to make time for our friends and ourselves, without our partners being a part of it, when we're in same sex relationships...everything becomes so intertwined. It is so important to have that separation of space and "time with the girls" just to hang out and reconnect.
Thanks for the reminder, and for making me HUNGRY!
Sounds divine. Nice to have friends like that.
Oh you're so right! Just this week my best friend and I had a girlie night in watching Mamma Mia and enjoyed a bottle of wine - bliss!
Sounds like a wonderful evening and you give some excellent advice at the end...have a grand weekend
Sounds like a good evening. I have few friends. I don't keep in contact with people because I don't want to be a bother. I guess I could send a snail mail just to let them know they are my mind...
Sounds like fun and it is surely a good thing to have good friends!
I try not to have friends, it seems to be working!
;-)
I had cocktails with my bff last night as well.
I love connecting with friends like that means so much!
never had a cosmo???!!! girrrrrrl. and I love your suggestion to get together with a girlfriend...
I emailed an old friend and hopefully will be going to see her in June. :)
I look forward to the day I receive a text like that. It's been hard moving to a new city even though it's almost been 3 years now. Finding, making and keeping friends as you get older is harder than I ever imagined it to be. I used to love everybody. Not everybody loves you back. That's a really hard lesson to learn. . .
I love this post :) I've had a friend who was my best friend since 7th grade and we stayed close for many years after high school until she married an abusive man and I had to distance myself because of her constant denial...we missed each other horribly thru those dark years. Then she left him and we slowly started building our friendship again and we try to get together for lunch every couple months or so..no matter how much time goes by, we always pick up right where we left off..its awesome having her in my life like that :)
I totally get what you're saying about the whole "best friend" distinction. It's funny how it can be used against you ... no, not funny, but sad. Been there, done that.
On another note, I have to comment on your whole Cosmo experience. I have only had them once ... ONCE. At a friend's house, and she kept refilling my glass before it was empty. I have no idea how much I drank, but thought I was going to die the next day. No, I actually WISHED I could die the next day!
Gonna go see some of my favorite Goddesses today!
