Out Of Sorts

That's what I've been this week. Why? Because I have a new sofa.

Trust me, I know exactly how odd that sounds. I haven't even wanted to tell anyone, because it just sounds nuts. Even to me.

Let me back up. I'm throwing my parents a 50th Anniversary party this fall. Big deal. Probably around 100 people. IN MY BACKYARD. So, I was already stressed. Then last Friday, my mother says, "I was wondering what you're doing this weekend? Do you have any time to go on a little trip?"

I thought she wanted to *go* somewhere.

No. She wanted to go sofa shopping for me. Off we went, Saturday morning to a couple of stores. Found nothing. Then my love and I went Saturday afternoon, and I saw one I liked, but it was probably too big for the room.

Monday, all three of us went. All day. All over creation. I finally wound up back at the place that I'd found on Saturday afternoon and we bought that sectional.

Then the buyers remorse set in. I really like my old sofa, but my mother doesn't. She wanted me to have a "nice" sofa for the party. Let me translate that for you...she was embarrassed by my four year old leather sofa.

That's what I've been doing all week. Fretting over a sofa. Who knew you could get so attached to an old couch?

I am officially feeling crazy, spoiled and unappreciative.

Our sofa is over ten years old. A new sofa sounds like the most beautiful thing ever. :)

I will say this only once...

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING ATTACHED TO AN OLD COUCH!

Have a grand weekend.

Our couch is used almost exclusively by an elderly, 120 pound labrador with gas......
ahem.

oh my four years old in a couch hardly qualifies as old.. i would think of it more as being barely broken in!!!! but your new one is lovely ... :)

I say (if you gaive a crap about what I say)send the new one back, get your old sofa back and tell mom that it's your home, not hers. If she wants another sofa she can rent you one for that weekend and return it on Monday. Other wise, you will pray for rain that weekend.

I like the new one too. Looks comfy.

I get buyer's remorse when I can't believe I wasted money on crap I don't need. I still feel that way about the only piece of living room furniture (a leather chair) I own. On the other hand, I don't regret buying a single piece of my computer equipment.

All of our furniture was lovingly purchased at scratch and dent sales.

All I need is a place to park my butt, with room for the dogs butts!

Several years ago I bought a new couch and love seat. I loved it. Until I got it home. Everyday I entered the living room I felt out of sorts that I didn't have my old set. As soon as I got enough money saved I went out and bought another one. But it seemed that the balance of things were screwed up.

Maybe one of the reasons you're fretting is because your mom thinks your four-year old couch isn't good enough. That would be enough to piss me off.

Right there with ya, Sister. A few years back my parents gifted us with a new sofa and easy chair because they hated my LL Bean futon couch (which I loved! It folded out into a bed, what could be cooler? I could even change the slipcover AND the bolsters to match my mood. Sigh.).

Well, the futon now lives in the garage, and amazingly I have come to love the new couch. It's getting all worn down and comfy just the way I like it!

And YOUR new couch looks absolutely lovely!

I'm like you. Change takes getting used to. But I do like the sectional picture you posted. Love the chocolate brown.

Is your old one in red leather? I'll take it! Give me a price and I'll be there. :-)

Your mother sounds like mine...always coming in and trying to redecorate the place. I happen to like the new sofa, but it's you that has to feel good on it. I hope you bond with it SOON!! :)

I grieved for my sofa last year. After 14 years the PLAID just wasn't gonna cut it anymore. No one but me ever liked it, but it was the first major furniture purchase I ever made. I like my new sofa, but it just ain't the same. I feel your pain. Here's to making peace with the new sofa.

Maybe pass the old one on to a good home?

I've always been happy to replace my sofas but then I've always had them for a lot longer than 4 years! :)

-For some reason I thought of The Sopranos...

I am sure you could donate your old one perhaps?

My family has a weird thing about couches too. If you have time come on over to my blog and check it out. It's located in the archives of 10/08 and is called The Couch Strikes Back. Congrats to your parents, that's quite an accomplishment.

I need a new couch so freaking bad! But I LOVE my old set, so yea, I know what you mean.

But that couch in the picture? That's the one you got? I LOVE it!

hi hon, what i hear from your post is that the issue really isnt with the sofa per say- its with your mom who is being condescending and possibly making you feel like you arent enough or dont have good taste... or something along those lines. i dont even know your mom and if youre relationship isnt like that i do apologise. its your house, is she embarrassed of it?
i have such issues with something like this... iall i hope for you is that you are happy with your home, that it feels comfy to you and the mrs. cuz really, nothing else matters. maybe you should fuck the wife on it several times, break it in, then see how you feel about it hahaha

hugs,

chris
